The most *moving* moments of 2016.
It’s almost the end of the year and thought we’d reach out to a few of our MADE Tribe friends for their highlights of 2016. GIF maker extraordinaire Sam Cannon gives us her animated picks and answers a few questions. Let’s get it *moving*.
If you could photograph anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
My big sister.
Best compliment you’ve ever received?
Cara Delevigne once told me my gifs were the coolest she had ever seen.
Do you prefer to shoot backstage or runway?
I really love shooting runway for two reasons. One, the challenge of shooting something that will happen once, and very quickly, is exciting to me. And two, I love trying to make something fresh and mesmerizing with a subject that is being simultaneously shot by so many photographers.
How do you capture time through your work?
My work is very influenced by the way we perceive time, and especially the time we spend interacting with images online. I am interested in creating looping images, exploring never-ending moments in the age of the 15 second clip.
Instagram account you need your daily dose of?
Last person you kissed?
My cat, Bones.
What inspired you to merge photo and video?
I’ve honestly never distinguished the two that much. I struggled for a long time creatively because I felt like I had to choose. Once I realized I could work somewhere between the two, I felt I was finally able to create the types of images that had been living in my head.
How much does your professional and personal life intersect?
It would be easier to find the few moments that they part. I spend all my time thinking about what I want to make next, I’m surrounded by friends who are immensely talented and inspiring, my partner is also a photographer who constantly challenges me to be better. I feel like everything and everyone in my day-to-day fuels my work and keeps me going.
Describe your perfect muse.
I wouldn’t be able to describe them. I would feel so at a loss for words that I would have to grab my camera.
It’s a Saturday night, where can we find you?
Sitting in the corner at a bar with some really cool people talking about gifs.
Are you currently working on a passion project?
Yes! I am halfway through a 6 month residency at Mana Contemporary where I will be focusing on my personal projects and collaborations with 4 other artists: Matthias Brown @traceloops , Hayden Zezula @zolloc , Julian Glander @glanderco , and Thoka Maer @thokamaer.
Last thing you cried about?
During a screening of the film, “Moonlight”.
Words to live by?
Call your mom.
