Hanging out in the studio with PAGEANT.
We’re bringing you all the action from MADE Sydney, our debut Australian FASHION x SKATE x MUSIC event. See more here.
Having previously worked for iconic labels such as Christopher Shannon, Christopher Kane, and Perks and Mini (P.A.M.), Amanda Cumming and Kate Reynolds have marched on through the scene with their independent fashion label PAGEANT established in 2010. Their garments are an alternative vision of femininity that is fresh, fierce and current.
Not only are their designs forged from technically sophisticated fabrics, they have drawn inspiration from diverse realms and aesthetic odes to sportswear. We got to speak with Amanda and Kate who took us through a day in life of PAGEANT and snapped some of the brands friends, collaborators and artists in the studio exclusively for MADE.
What are you working on right now?
Amanda: Right now we have just finished shooting our trans-seasonal collection SIGNALS
Kate: We are starting to work on an exhibition/static presentation to be held in Melbourne next year in March
First thing you do when you wake up?
Amanda: I just got a puppy so I take her for a walk, then coffee of course!
Kate: Check my phone then get a coffee
Can you tell us about the origin of the name of your brand?
Amanda: We originally launched the label as a menswear brand and were interested in exploring youth culture and that coming of age moment when teenage guys define themselves through dress, music and scenes. For us the word pageant related directly to this idea, looking at this moment like it was a procession of some sort.
Kate: When we launched the womenswear, the word had different connotations and we liked the challenge of exploring that!
What would your dream PAGEANT entail?
Both: A big street parade and then a party with all our friends!
Share some words that you live by.
Both: Dream big and be positive! ☺
What are your favorite Instagram accounts?
Amanda: @kikifwafwa @tompolo @timber_tim_moore
Kate: @earlboykins @eye99 @baddorgz
Who is the most surprising person you’ve heard of wearing your line?
Amanda: PAGEANT has a pretty youthful vibe, so probably our aunties and friend’s mums who are in their 60’s. They are all pretty adventurous in the way they dress which is really inspiring!
Who is the PAGEANT muse?
Amanda: Our circle of friends who are artists and designers are a constant source of inspiration for PAGEANT.
Kate: Rihanna, always!
Is there a rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney?
Amanda: There is definitely a different energy between the cities when it comes to fashion, Melbourne is a bit grungier and Sydney is more polished but slowly the scenes are becoming more intertwined. We love going to Sydney for a bit of a refresher!
What are you wearing right now?
Amanda: It’s starting to warm up in Melbourne so I’m wearing a PAGEANT Terrain Sleeveless Dress in Onyx from our Hang Tough collection paired with Fendi sandals and Lucy Folk jewels.
Kate: My PAGEANT Logo Sweatshirt and Track Pant twinset in Onyx and white Acne ‘Adriana’ sneakers
What’s the last thing you do before bed?
Amanda: Read a book, the news or check Instagram
Kate: Listen to a podcast and check Instagram
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your mentors?
Amanda: Don’t compromise your vision and try to keep a sense of humor about it all.
Kate: Honesty is key to a successful working relationship!
