Interview with NYC based artist Jimi Lucid
NYC based artist Jimi Lucid combines his music and visual work to create fire videos. We’ve talked to him about his upcoming album and what inspires him.
What are you working on right now?
My first album which is called “Nothing Bliss”
Would you most consider yourself an artist, a photographer, or a musician?
An artist but I do like music and video work, but overall visuals in general are really important to me. I think they are completely interconnected. Colors and Sounds are one to me.
What’s the best about what you do?
I like making people feel something. My main point is to make people feel in the space I’ve created. I want to give people a moment of good feeling and acceptance that they are not alone.
And the worst?
It can be hard to get your vision across the exact way you want, but I’ve met more musicians and artists that I vibe with which has been making it easier.
Do you prefer modeling or being behind the camera?
I don’t really do much photography, I definitely like modeling more.
Choose one word to describe your aesthetic. (We let him choose two)
Love and antiestablishment.
Do you use work to express your political views?
Yeah, I definitely express the emotions I feel toward politics in my work. I think it’s time we make sure our voices are heard and fight back against the growing acceptance of fear and hatred. I find even my existence as a black man to be political.
Are you in school? What are you studying?
I’m studying media studies and music at Parsons. I’m on my last semester about to graduate.
What is your favorite spot in NY?
I like the Piers, like where the Hudson is.
What were you like in high school?
I don’t know if I wanna answer this question… I didn’t know what the f*ck I was doing. I didn’t understand myself yet. But I definitely stay true to who I was when I was younger.
Probably like not being able to get my vision out there and not being able to change the world in the way I can for a lot of people
How do you build your wardrobe?
I do a lot of thrifting my favorite store right now is Urban Jungle but I’m also from D.C. so there’s a huge warehouse for thrifting there called Unique.
What genre is your music?
I would say psychedelic hip hop inspired by rock.
What music do you listen to?
I listen to all genres. I like Tame Impala, Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, & Melody’s Echo Chamber.
What’s your most played song right now?
Red Bone by Childish Gambino.
What song makes you lose it at the club? Do you go to clubs?
*Reluctantly says* Bad and Boujee. *laughs* I really like venue shows like warehouse parties. I actually throw parties as well. Into this one spot in Brooklyn called Member’s Only.
Biggest pet peeve?
Biggest turn on?
Favorite Instagram account?
What trends are you into?
I feel like a lot of trends are happening right now. People are really going toward a rock aesthetics (rock tees). It’s funny because I’ve done it since seventh grade and now it’s cool but I’m happy about it because I think that culture is really cool. But honestly, do ur own thing and eventually it becomes cool.
