The design duo talks aesthetics, astronaut aspirations, and secret talents.
Nowadays it’s hard to stand out in the sea of fashion startups all racing to the industry’s summit. But Candamill, a New York City accessories label, does so effortlessly with its clean architecturally-inspired handbags. Designed by the brother-sister duo, Cindy and Cristian Candamill, the brand is making its way to the top with features in Marie Claire, W, and Vogue. MADE caught up with the designers to talk their aesthetic, astronaut aspirations, secret talents, and more. Get into the chat to discover the deets about the Candamill duo you don’t want to miss.
How did the Candamill brand come about?
With both of us having backgrounds in art, fashion and design, along with not liking being told what to do, starting Candamill was the most logical decision, lol.
You describe your aesthetic as “New Mid-Century,” can you elaborate on that?
The developments in design during the Mid-20th century at its essence was a rejection of tradition, a real embrace of moving forward. Our approach to New Mid-Century is not based on the style, but on the idea of rethinking the way accessories are made.
Besides the structural aspects of your accessories, how does architecture influence your designs?
The spaces and structures that are most influential to us strike curiosity and demand attention, we base our design on that feeling.
What’s it like working with your sibling?
Cristian is very abstract and I tend to be more technical, it’s the perfect balance when working on a new design. Other than that, we have a great time in the studio, it never feels like work.
What is the design process like?
Our process is free, Candamill is about innovation and the goal is to truly create original designs. If it takes 6 months or 1 year to fully develop our idea, then that’s what we’re going to do.
What are your secret talents?
We direct, photograph and edit all of our look books & editorials in house. Cindy and I are insanely hands-on with every aspect of the business.
When you’re not designing, what are you doing?
Most likely walking around the city, shooting architecture and drinking coffee, that’s when we do our best thinking.
What are your favorite Instagram accounts to stalk?
If you weren’t designers, what would be your profession?
Cindy – Forensic Investigator
Cristian – Astronaut
Describe Candamill in 3 words.
Minimal. Elegant. Cool.
What’s the most exciting thing that has happened for your brand thus far?
Being featured on MADE of course! We recently decided to remove ourselves from the fashion calendar. Going direct to consumer has been liberating, allowing more time to develop our ideas.
Who do you want to see sporting a Candamill design?
We want to see people that appreciate and understand our design carrying Candamill.
