Drown it out with sound
LA-based label Outside Insight just signed its first artist: SADAF. From producer to violinist, vocalist, and multi-media artist, there isn’t anything that the Iranian born, now NYC based artist can’t do. Her production wavers between abstraction and lyricism, contemplating the disparate emotional affects inherent in noise, speech and silence. Drawing on global influences such as traditional middle eastern instrumentation, free jazz noise violin, deconstructed Dembow and Reggaeton, and digital hardcore tendencies, she creates an unconventional palette for the post-dj era. All these influences are present in her most recent drop DROWN IT, a visual mixtape comprised of entirely original, live and unreleased washes of beats, sounds, words, and impressions, evoking a liquified winter mood, accompanied by a self-directed visual diary which leaves the viewer floating within a meditative yet slippery slide into the nostalgic. SADAF has presented work at MoMa PS1 Warmup, Moma PS1 Sunday sessions, the 9th Berlin Biennale, Performa and Issue Project Room.
DROWN IT is the first in a thematic series released through Outside Insight, to be followed by LET IT BURN, which you can peep below.
Catch SADAF’s live performance at Knitting Factory Brooklyn this Thursday, April 6th.
