Peep London’s PLACES + FACES photos of the hip hop V.I.P.
PLACES+FACES is the London duo photographing the who’s who of the hip hop intelligentsia, from the rappers, innovators and influencers shaping it into what is today and into what it will become tomorrow. Originally a Tumblr founded by two concert-loving university students, PLACES + FACES have retained their realness as they emerged overnight as the leading documentarians of the 2010s hip hop zeitgeist, capturing the likes of Kanye, Frank Ocean, Skepta and Drake on and offstage— and even Snapchatting backstage— much to the delight of thousands of followers. Unreserved, straightforward, and with the signature squint from flash, the PLACES + FACES shot is authentic and unfailingly transports you to the chillest moment of the shows and afterparties.
Not only is Places+Faces selling merch and DJing MADE Sydney, the P+F popup will be turned into a mini gallery with behind the scenes/candid photos they have taken of rappers like Young Thug, Kanye West, ASAP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla Sign to name a few.
It’s a great feeling because, just being able to travel and shoot in different cities is awesome to us, so for us to be showing our work in these cities as well as an exhibition is like a dream.
PLACES + FACES is more a lifestyle now than just two friends shooting shows – how did you guys find the crossover from documenting to really creating the brand it is today?
It was all natural. At the beginning we just made a hoodie for us to wear so when we go to events, people would see our branding and then go on to our website. Then it turned into a thing where people actually wanted to buy and wear our stuff, so we made merch. We threw parties because a lot of the events we went to weren’t playing the songs we like.
What was it like to make a zine? How was it transitioning from a Tumblr/internet to print format?
We always loved the idea of having physical things. Printing our work in zines was just another step of us and other people owning pieces of our work that they can look at without having to go online.
Who would you guys love to collaborate with?
We’d love to do a shoot with Bill Murray.
Where are you based at the moment?
What are you working on right now?
A lot of new shoots and merch ideas.
If you weren’t doing photography, what career path would you be pursuing?
Soulz: A Chef
What would you like to see happening in your future, and for the future of PLACES + FACES?
Everything, as well as P+F being like a photography duo. I want to make everyday essentials like Homeware, furniture cameras, movies etc.
Where do you look for inspiration?
What’s your most played song right now?

Being behind the camera can be a very empowering yet sometimes very vulnerable place. Tell us about your best and worst moments behind the camera.
Ciesay: One of my best moments behind the camera was shooting an abandoned amusement park in Japan. One of my worst moments when someone accidentally pushed my hand and my camera dropped and broke during a shoot.
Soulz: One of my best moments was shooting in Tokyo. One of my worst moments was when my camera malfunctioned as I was doing a shoot with Desiigner.
Biggest turn on?
Waiting for photos to be developed and when they come out looking better than you expected.
