Curating the idea of children’s DIY gifting.
‘With Love, A Holiday Special’ curates the idea of children’s DIY gifting. Each outfit presents the childishness and naivety of crafting at home, offering sentimental importance. Designers Laura & Jason developed the collection from two garment archetypes – the apron/smock (x) and the pajama (y) – each assisting in the narrative of this collection.
(x) presents the activity of crafting
(y) the situation in which gifts are created and/or received
The childish nature is continually reflected in the ability for the capsule to be styled (slapped on) playfully. The entire process of our collaboration has lead us to share the festivities and the playful nature via design.
The holiday collection is a platform that we are able to collaborate with artists and each other. This is an outlet which enables us to explore freely with our creativity. Starting in 2015, after graduating from RMIT we felt a need to still be active in our creative practice, and being in the festive and holiday spirit the themes on sharing and collaborating continued to interest us.
Laura & Jason
Laura Spence uses fashion as a platform to question and challenge the relationships between context, dress and action. Through the interrogation of these ideas and the reconfiguration of traditional construction methods, her work offers distinctly detailed and performative components that often result in somewhat playful and naïve outcomes.
Jason Tran is a fashion practitioner concerned with the simplicity of exploration, inherently reflective of his research-lead process. His practice embraces an interdisciplinary approach and explores design with a semi-naïvety. Letting go of formalities, his practice is guided by intuition and experience.
