Bryce Barnes’s new collection “Coalition” is an ode to the misunderstood
Fashion designers have long shown interest in the idea of the misunderstood, but Bryce Barnes‘s new collection revives the narrative with much more depth for our divided times. “Coalition” pays tribute to controversial political figures who gave back to their communities, yet who–in spite of their benevolence– were vilified by the opposing media of their time, impacting their legacy even today. It is a testament to the very contemporary issue of representation, raising questions of not only why these historical figures were painted in such negative light, but also how (and why) those with political and cultural influence glorify some and cast aside others. Figures alluded to in this collection include Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara, Burkinabé military captain Thomas Sankara, as well as Black Panther founders Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The concept is smart, politically timely and visually delightful. See the gallery for some fresh track pants, hot pink berets, and stunning military coats.
